Théa-Rose Lester Mumford

Cellist

Cellist Théa-Rose is an active solo, chamber and orchestral player as well as a passionate teacher.

Théa graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA in Liberal Arts (Theology) in July 2017, where she pursued her musical career alongside her academic studies, beginning tuition in London with Tim Lowe (‘Cello Prof. Guildhall School of Music and Drama) whilst completing the final year of her degree.

Whilst in Exeter, Théa was principal cellist of both the Exeter University Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these regular commitments, she was extremely active throughout the vibrant music scene in Exeter, was awarded a music scholarship from the ExTunes university music department which gave her funding to continue private tuition, worked as Tour Manager, VP and subsequently President of the Chamber Orchestra, played in several theatre ensembles as principal/solo cellist and was in regular demand to guest with various musical ensembles and groups in and around Exeter. She has regularly toured to Europe and in her final year of study she had her concerto debut performing the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Exeter University Symphony Orchestra.

Théa continued her cello studies with Tim Lowe after graduating and regularly attended courses, including the International Cello Gathering, undertaking masterclasses with, among others, leading cellists Louise Hopkins, Adrian Brendel, Rebecca Gilliver, Sue Lowe, Pierre Doumenge, Matt Lowe, and Tim Lowe. She has also partaken in orchestral workshops, including with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and a sectional masterclass with Philippa Stevens.

Théa regularly gives recitals at both public and private venues and events around the UK and frequently guests with orchestras and chamber groups around London and the South and South West of the UK, including Westminster Opera Company, Sutton Philharmonic, Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Britannica, British Airways Orchestra, Per Piacere Chamber Orchestra, the Romsey Abbey Sinfonietta, and Southampton Concert Orchestra (SCO) to name but a few. She has performed in venues such as Cadogan Hall and St John’s Smith Square, London, The Great Hall, Exeter as well as various venues abroad including in France, Austria, Spain and the Czech Republic.

Théa is one half of the cello duo ‘The Duettists’, formed in early 2024, who have been bringing their imaginative arrangements to a wide array of venues and events across the UK.

Théa has won multiple awards and competitions for her playing, including winning ‘Outstanding Performance’ and the John Callan Trophy for the Overall Best Performance in the Strings Section at the Woodley Music Festival, and was winner of the Music At Beaulieu Senior Awards 2020.

As well as pursuing her career in performance, Théa is an in demand teacher and has a busy private student base, teaching both solo and ensemble work. She has teaching bases in both the Brockenhurst and Winchester areas in Hampshire. With many years of experience behind her, she is a caring and invested teacher, passionate about passing on the knowledge she has gained, as well as helping her students to find the joy that comes from playing music.

In 2020 Théa was forced to take a break from public performances due to increasingly problematic muscle pain and severe migraines. After a long period of tests she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and has since been working on recovery from and management of the condition. In mid 2021 Théa was able to restart her teaching and very slowly throughout 2022 and 2023 she started building up her cello playing again as well as restarting her studies and eventually public performances since 2024.
